TARANIS unfortunately didn´t make it to the orbit after a failure of the VEGA launcher on 17 November 2020. Investigations indicated that the failure was caused by the assembly mistake of the last stage of the launcher.
IME-HF instrument
Mission / Measurements of electromagnetic waves generated by TLEs (sprites, blue jets, elves, ...). The instrument will record waveform measurements of fluctuating electric fields in the frequency range from a few kHz up to 37 MHz. The IME-HF will be able to trigger and record interesting intervals of data using a flexible event detection algorithm.
Instrument / The instrument is based on 2 flip antennas with a preamplifier and analyzer. The IME-HF analyzer was designed at the Institute of Atmospheric Physics CAS, Prague, Czechia. Antennas were designed at the LPC2E laboratory in Orléans, France.
TARANIS mission
Mission / Transient luminous events (TLEs) and terrestrial gamma-ray flashes (TGFs).
Launch / --
Instruments / Cameras and photometers, X-ray and gamma-ray detectors, high-energy electron detectors, electromagnetic sensors, low- and high-frequency antennas to measure electric fields.
Orbit / Sun-synchronous polar orbit ~700 km
Mission lifetime / 2-4 years
